How is Erectile Dysfunction Diagnosed?

Erectile Dysfunction is hard to diagnose, so the diagnosis includes a series of tests and examinations carried out to identify the disease and its type. First of all, the patient is examined and blood tests are done to exclude other possible reasons of poor erection. The examination of cardie-vascular system and other tests help to find the source of the problem and to determine whether the patient ever has an erection (this is done to distinguish between physiological and psychological impotence).

The list of common manipulations to diagnose erectile dysfunction includes:

Duplex ultrasound. Is done to check the state of blood vessels and to evaluate the blood flow to the penis. Sometimes the infections of prostaglandine are done to induce erection and measure penile blood pressure.

Penile biothesiometry to evaluate the sensitivity of nerves and their functioning.

Dynamic infusion cavernosometry involves the infusion of water into the penis under low pressure. Is done to check the vascular pressure in the corpus cavernosum.

Magnetic resonance angiography to identify vascular anomalies and check blood supply to different tissues.

Is Erectile Dysfunction a Sentence?

I’d like to start with the answer: no, in 99% of cases ED can be treated or at least some measures can be taken to allow people to have normal or close to normal sexual life.

When you have nothing to hope for?

You chances to have a normal sexual life are close to zero if you have a serious heart disease and are not allowed to have sex because of a serious threat of heart attack and death, if you are over 70 and older or have underdeveloped penis, with no opportunity to make a penis enlargement surgery.

What about men with nerves damage and other serious medical conditions?

Individual approach is needed is each case and a surgery or an implant can be a way out in case the nerves and blood vessels in the genital area are badly-damaged. Sex toys can allow if not you, then your partner get a pleasure from the intercourse.

In all other cases hormonal therapy, psychotherapy or ED meds show good results and help to eliminate ED in 90+% of cases. Psychological impotence is rather hard to treat, as very unwilling to admit their problem and even more unwilling to work to eliminate it.

What is Erectile Dysfunction?

Erectile Dysfunction, or impotence, is a sexual disorder leading to the inability to achieve and maintain erection. The dysfunction is common for aged men, men with hormonal misbalance and can appear after serious traumas or a medical treatment.
Erection Mechanism
A penis is erected when the blood vessels inside it are filled with blood. Sex hormones worked out during a sexual arousal tell the brain to start the stimulation of nerves in the head of the penis. The greater is the stimulation, the firmer is the erection. When the stimulation is weak due to some reasons, men suffer from impotence and show a poor sexual performance in bed.
There exist 2 main types of erectile dysfunction:
1. Physical
2. Psychological
Physical erectile dysfunction is caused by physical reasons. They can include various diseases, a medical treatment, nerves injuries and other factors. Psychological erectile dysfunction occurs when there are no any evident reasons for poor erection and all the systems and organs in the body function properly. Such type of impotence can be a result of stress, depression or occasional failures in bed. Sometimes men cannot achieve or maintain erection due to some objective factors: lack of sleep, food or rest, stress or little time after the previous erection. Such single failure in bed can lead to a strong complex resulting in constant problems and impotence.

Erectile Dysfunction in Young Men: Causes and Treatment

Erectile dysfunction in young men can be caused with different factors. For men under 20 the most common reasons of erectile dysfunction can be:
1. Hormonal changes
2. Psychological reasons
3. Genetic reasons
Teenagers and young men go through a period of rapid physical and psychological changes. These quick shifts can cause a lot of problems: headaches, acne, hyperhidrosis and problems with erection. Sometimes young men overestimate themselves and try to have 5 and more sexual intercourses a day. It leads to general exhaustion and inability to have a good sexual performance during the following days. This is normal, but some young men consider this to be a signal of ED.
Unfortunately, in some cases sexual disorders are genetically caused and a serious professional treatment is required. Erectile dysfunction in young men is difficult to diagnose, as young men feel ashamed to admit they have problems with erection and some even consider poor erection to be a norm. The sooner the treatment is started, the better are the results.
Psychological reasons of erectile dysfunction in young men are, by far, the most common ones. Stresses, too much thrill, little experience make young men especially vulnerable. Each failure is taken as a catastrophe. Young men don’t even try to find out the reasons, they tend to retreat into themselves, start to avoid girls, try drugs and alcohol to forget about their problems. The vicious circle closes up.
